How to create a Mood Board
The Complete Simple Step-by-Step Guide to Creating your own Mood Board by AnaCoArt.
I find creating Mood Boards very relaxing and inspiring (it’s like creating a real life version of Pinterest!).
You can use them to get
inspired, plan new projects or even build your vision board for future plans and goals. No matter what you choose, see below a step-by-step guide showing how you can do this.
1. What you need
Magazines/ books/ colour swatches/ photographs
Scissors
Glue or push pins
Tape
Coloured paper
A board (this could be a corkboard, I use an old painting frame that I thrifted)
Finishing touches (dried flowers, shells, memorabilia, etc.)
2. Getting Started
Gather all your materials, magazines and books. Look through all of these and cut out anything that inspires you. I like to also use postcards, photographs that I’ve taken, colour swatches, and even exhibition or gallery tickets!
When you have everything, start to notice the themes that you picked and start making different piles and start sorting them by colour and size.
Tip: Keep your biggest favourite images at the top so that they can become your focal point later on.
After your piles are done, grab your board and start playing around with the images, without pinning anything. This exercise is for figuring out the layout, without committing to a final design.
3. Bring it together
After you decided on your main layout, the final stage is to add in any pretty props you may have around your home. I used dry-pressed seaweed, little watercolour drawings that I’ve made, broken pottery pieces and shells. Anything that makes your heart sing, but also complements your mood board aesthetic and feel! I love to collect inspiring objects on my travels or even from walks around the block.
And now you have a beautiful mood board to inspire you every time you see it! I like to change mine every few months depending on what projects I am working on and also according to the season.
I really hope you enjoyed this post and create your own boards! Please share them with me on Instagram, I would love to see what you create and don’t forget to follow me over there to see more of my mood boards, as well as my other creative projects.
